More about E-Bikes

Which e-bike is right for you? If you ride five to ten miles across town and want the lowest possible upkeep, look at the lightweight single speed and belt drive models in the Tenways range. If the bike has to fold into a hallway or go on a train, the Hygge folding e-bikes are the ones to see. If you are carrying shopping or a child seat, you want a longer wheelbase and a rack rated for the weight, and we will tell you which models actually are.

How far will it really go? Manufacturer range figures assume flat ground, low assistance and a light rider. In London use, plan on roughly 60 to 75 percent of the quoted number. A mid drive motor uses the gears the way you do, so it holds its range better on hills than a hub motor, which matters more than a few extra watt hours on paper.

We service and repair electric bikes in house, including battery health checks and motor diagnostics, so your bike stays in Bow rather than disappearing to a manufacturer for weeks. Book through our workshop, spread the cost with the Cycle to Work scheme, and have the finished bike delivered fully built anywhere in England and Wales.

Still deciding? Our Tenways e-bike buyer's guide compares every model we stock, and CGO600 vs CGO800S covers the two most common shortlists.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence or insurance for an e-bike in the UK?

No. An e-bike that assists up to 15.5mph, cuts the motor above that and has a motor rated at 250W or less counts as a bicycle in the UK, so there is no licence, no tax and no registration. You need to be 14 or over to ride one. Insurance is not required, but it is worth having in London.

How long does an e-bike battery last?

Most batteries hold usable capacity for roughly 500 to 800 full charge cycles, which for a typical commuter is three to five years. You get more out of it by storing the bike somewhere cool, not leaving the battery sitting at zero or at 100 percent for weeks, and using the charger it came with. We check battery health as part of an e-bike service.

Can you service and repair my e-bike in the shop?

Yes. We service and repair electric bikes in house in Bow, including battery health checks and motor diagnostics, so the bike does not disappear to a manufacturer for weeks. E-bikes need servicing more often than a normal bike, not less, because the assistance wears chains, cassettes and brake pads faster.

Can I get an e-bike on the Cycle to Work scheme?

Yes. Every e-bike we sell is eligible, and because most providers no longer cap the value, an e-bike is where the saving is largest. Depending on your tax band you save roughly 28 to 42 percent. We work with the main schemes and handle the paperwork with your provider.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Tell us how far you ride, where you park it and what you need to carry, and we will point you at the right model. We build and safety check every bike in our workshop in Bow before it leaves.
