More about Kid Bikes

What size does my child need? Wheel size follows height rather than age, and the gap between a 20in and a 24in is bigger than most parents expect. Our kids bike size guide gives wheel size by age and height, but bring them in if you can and we will put them on the right one in five minutes.

Ridgeback Dimension and MX bikes are where most of our customers start, mainly because they are light. Weight is the one thing that decides whether a child enjoys riding, and a heavy supermarket bike puts more children off cycling than traffic ever will.

Every kids bike is built and safety checked in our workshop in Bow, and we set the brakes up for small hands rather than leaving them at the factory setting. Bring it back to the workshop when they grow into the next saddle height and we will do it while you wait. Kids bikes are not eligible for Cycle to Work, but helmets and child seats are here too.

Frequently asked questions

What size bike does my child need?

Wheel size follows height rather than age, and children of the same age vary enormously. As a rough guide, 14in suits about 95 to 105cm, 16in about 105 to 115cm, 20in about 115 to 130cm and 24in about 130 to 145cm. Bring them in if you can and we will have them on the right one in five minutes.

Should I buy a bigger bike for them to grow into?

No. A bike that is too big is not a bike they grow into, it is a bike they do not ride, because they cannot reach the brakes or put a foot down when something surprises them. Buy the size that fits now. We adjust saddle height free while they grow, and a well kept kids bike holds its value when you move up.

Can I buy a kids bike on Cycle to Work?

No. The scheme covers a bike for the employee's own journey to work, so children's bikes are not eligible. Child seats and trailers used on your own commute usually are, and we can tell you what your provider will accept before you order.

Does the weight of a kids bike really matter?

More than anything else on it. A heavy supermarket bike can weigh close to half what the child does, which is the equivalent of an adult riding a bike weighing 35kg. Weight is the single biggest reason children give up on cycling, which is why we stick to lighter ranges like Ridgeback.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Tell us how far you ride, where you park it and what you need to carry, and we will point you at the right model. We build and safety check every bike in our workshop in Bow before it leaves.
