More about Hybrid Bikes

Hybrid or gravel? If you want flat bars and the confidence that comes with them, you are in the right place. If you cover longer distances and want a second hand position, look at gravel bikes instead. Several of the flat bar bikes here are gravel bikes in everything but the handlebar, which is exactly why they work so well in London.

Ridgeback has been our best seller since the day we opened and covers the practical end, with mudguards, racks and lights sorted from the start. Genesis brings steel frames and a lifetime frame warranty for riders who want something they will keep.

Add a lock and lights before you ride away, spread the cost through the Cycle to Work scheme, and bring it back to our workshop for servicing. If you are locking it up in London, Laka insurance is worth twenty minutes of your time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hybrid and a gravel bike?

Mostly the handlebar. A hybrid gives you flat bars, a more upright position and better visibility in traffic. A gravel bike gives you drop bars and a second hand position for longer rides. Several of the bikes on this page are gravel frames with flat bars, which is exactly why they work so well in London.

Are hybrid bikes good for commuting?

They are the default choice for good reason: upright enough to see the traffic, quick enough not to feel like hard work, and usually ready for mudguards, racks and lights. If your commute runs beyond about ten miles each way, look at a gravel bike or an e-bike alongside them.

Do hybrid bikes come with mudguards and a rack?

Some do, particularly the fully equipped city models. Where they do not, the frame almost always has the mounts, and we will fit guards, a rack and lights for you in the workshop before you take the bike away rather than sending you home with a box of parts.

Can I fit an e-bike conversion kit to my hybrid?

We do not recommend it. Conversion kits usually invalidate the frame warranty, rarely match the braking to the extra speed and weight, and the battery mounting is the part that most often fails. A purpose built e-bike is safer, easier to service and holds its value better.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Tell us how far you ride, where you park it and what you need to carry, and we will point you at the right model. We build and safety check every bike in our workshop in Bow before it leaves.
