It started in a living room

It started in a living room

Marco spent more than a decade in the London bike trade before Aztecs existed. When the pandemic took his job, he started fixing bikes at home in Bow, because it was the thing he knew how to do and neighbours kept asking.

Word travelled. The living room filled up. By September 2021 we had the keys to 4 Corsican Square, and in December we opened the doors.

Nothing about the way we work has changed since then. You get told the truth about your bike, you get a clear price, and you decide what happens next.

What we stand for

Four things we decided on early and have not moved on since, however much the shop has grown.

  • Qualified mechanics

Cytech 2 certified, with more than ten years in the cycling industry before the shop ever opened its doors.

  • Transparent and fair

You get the full picture and a clear quote. Nothing is done to your bike until you have said yes to it.

  • Empowering cyclists

We explain what we did and why it mattered, so you leave understanding your bike a little better than when you arrived.

  • Part of the neighbourhood

A local shop in Bow with a ride club, not a chain. We see the same faces every week and we like it that way.

Where we are now

Five years on from the living room, still on the same street, still run by the people who fix your bike.

The story so far

From a decade on the tools, to a spare room and on to an award-winning shop.

  1. A wheel being built by hand at Aztecs Bikes, the trade Marco learned before the shop existed
    2008 to 2018

    A life in bikes

More than a decade turning spanners across the London bike trade, learning how workshops run and, just as usefully, how they fail their customers.

  2. Bikes and repair tools filling the living room where Aztecs Bikes started in Bow
    2020 to 2021

    The living room

Out of work after the pandemic, Marco started fixing bikes at home. Word spread through Bow faster than anyone expected.

  3. The Aztecs Bikes shop being fitted out from bare concrete at 4 Corsican Square
    2021

    The keys to Corsican Square

Cytech 2 qualification in the spring, keys to 4 Corsican Square in September, doors open in December.

    2024

    So close

Shortlisted for the BikeBiz Awards, and we went home without the trophy. We used it as fuel for the year that followed.

    Dealer of the Year

Independent Bike Dealer of the Year, our online store and a ride club that gets people out on Sundays.

A shop worth walking into

A shop worth walking into

We wanted a workshop where you could ask a stupid question without being made to feel stupid, and where the person quoting the job is the person doing it.

So the mechanics are Cytech 2 qualified and the quotes are written down. Safety-critical work is separated from the nice to have, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and why.

That is also why the reviews read the way they do. Our customers describe us better than we describe ourselves.

How we work

The promises we make to every rider who wheels a bike through the door.

  • Honest advice, even when it means telling you not to spend money
  • Clear written quotes before any work begins
  • Safety separated from nice to have, so you choose knowingly
  • Options at every budget, from a basic fix to a full overhaul
  • Every bike treated the same, whether it is £200 or £8,000
  • Manufacturer-trained on the brands we are authorised to service
  • Time taken to explain the work rather than rushing you out
  • A shop that is still here when you need it again

About the shop

Where we are, what we are qualified in and what you can expect when you come in.

Where exactly are you?

4 Corsican Square, Bow, London E3 3XS. We are one minute on foot from Devons Road DLR, which makes us easy to reach from Canary Wharf, Stratford, Mile End and the City. See how to find us for directions and opening hours, or read more about the shop in Bow.

What does Cytech 2 actually mean?

Cytech is the recognised technical training standard for bicycle mechanics in the UK. Level 2 covers full servicing and diagnosis across the whole bike. It is a formal qualification, not a badge a shop can award itself. It is the same qualification behind every job on our repairs and servicing menu, and behind the wheels we build by hand.

Do I need an appointment?

For a service, yes, please book your bike in so we can plan the workshop properly. For a quick question, a puncture or advice on a part, walk in and we will help if we can.

Which brands are you an authorised service centre for?

Tenways, Hygge, Ribble and Elite Wheels. That means manufacturer-trained technicians, warranty work handled properly and access to genuine parts. We also service electric bikes from every brand we sell.

Do you only work on expensive bikes?

No, and we would push back on the idea. A commuter hybrid that somebody relies on every day gets the same attention as a carbon race bike. The stakes are the same when the brakes fail. Our service tiers start with a basic tune and go up to a full strip and rebuild, so there is a sensible option at any budget.

Is there a ride club?

Yes. The Aztecs ride club heads out of the shop most weekends, for riders of mixed ability. Routes, pace and the next date are all on that page.

Do you sell bikes as well as repair them?

Yes. We stock a considered range rather than everything: Genesis and Ridgeback for touring, gravel and kids, Tenways and Hygge for electric commuting, and Basso and Cinelli at the Italian end of road and gravel. Browse every bike.

Can I use the Cycle to Work scheme with you?

Yes, with every major provider. See our Cycle to Work page for how it works and what you can spend it on, and who owns the bike at the end if you want the part most schemes gloss over.
