The kit our own mechanics use, and honest advice on what you need

Chain lube, degreaser, cleaners, sealant, torque wrenches and workshop tools. Most of this is what we use ourselves in Bow, which is a better recommendation than anything on the packaging.

More about Tools & Maintenance

Which chain lube? Wet lube through a British winter, dry lube in July. That covers most riders. A waxed chain wants something different again, so ask us rather than guessing and we will point at what suits your drivetrain instead of the most expensive bottle.

Do I need a torque wrench? If you own anything carbon, yes. Overtightening a seatpost clamp or a stem bolt is the most common way riders damage their own bikes, and a torque wrench costs less than one carbon repair.

Cleaning is easier bought as a set than piecemeal, so start with the bike cleaning kits or the full Muc-Off range. If you would rather someone else did it, book the workshop.

Frequently asked questions

What tools do I actually need at home?

A track pump, a set of hex keys, tyre levers, a chain wear checker and a rag will cover almost everything a rider needs between services. Add a torque wrench if you own anything carbon. Beyond that, the tools get specific to your groupset and are usually cheaper to borrow from a workshop than to buy.

Do I need a torque wrench?

If you own anything carbon, yes. Overtightening a seatpost clamp, a stem bolt or a bar clamp is the most common way riders damage their own bikes, and a torque wrench costs a fraction of one carbon repair. Every torque figure you need is printed on the part.

How often should I lube my chain?

When it starts sounding dry, and always after a wet ride. Wipe the old lube off before adding new, otherwise you are just building up a grinding paste of oil and road grit. One drop per roller, then wipe the outside clean. More lube is not better lube.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Tell us how far you ride, where you park it and what you need to carry, and we will point you at the right model. We build and safety check every bike in our workshop in Bow before it leaves.
