More about Tyres & Wheels

Which tyre? Wider than you think, and softer than the pressure printed on the sidewall. On London roads a 32mm tyre at a sensible pressure is quicker and far more comfortable than a 25mm one pumped hard. Tell us the frame clearance you have and we will tell you the widest tyre that will actually fit.

Factory or hand built wheels? A hand built wheel can be repaired, retensioned and rebuilt around the same hub for years, which a sealed factory wheelset often cannot. We go through the trade offs in hand built vs factory wheels, and we build wheels in the shop at 60 GBP labour per wheel.

We fit tyres, set up tubeless and true wheels in the workshop, usually while you wait. Sealant and puncture protection sit in tools and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

What tyre pressure should I run?

Lower than the number printed on the sidewall, which is a maximum rather than a recommendation. Pressure depends on tyre width, your weight and the surface, and on London roads most riders are running far too hard. Tell us your tyre size and weight and we will give you a starting point.

Should I go tubeless?

If you ride gravel or wide road tyres, usually yes: fewer punctures, lower pressures and a better ride. If you ride narrow tyres and rarely puncture, the extra faff is harder to justify. Your rims and tyres both need to be tubeless ready, so check with us before you buy sealant.

Are hand built wheels better than factory wheels?

Not always better, but far more repairable. A hand built wheel can be retensioned, respoked and rebuilt around the same hub for years, where a sealed factory wheelset with proprietary spokes often cannot. For daily riding in London that difference matters more than a few hundred grams.

Not sure which one is right for you?

Tell us how far you ride, where you park it and what you need to carry, and we will point you at the right model. We build and safety check every bike in our workshop in Bow before it leaves.
